Freedom is perhaps the most important characteristic of today's modern society. We want to express our opinions, to live according to what we think is best, to choose our own occupation. These routes through Amsterdam show you how the commercial spirit of the city in the seventeenth-century caused both freedom and unfreedom: poverty, exploitation and slavery where part of this young capitalism as well as freedom of speech and tolerance for other beliefs. Freethinkers where attracted to this bigger freedom. These books changed the world and made individual freedom more important. The influence of these Amsterdam thinkers in our world is explained. You will also discover that fighting for this freedom could sometimes result in death. The tour is recommended for people above sixteen years old. A special edition of the tour is also available for kids above ten years old.

Thanks to the HFA, Humanism Fund Amsterdam which made this walk possible through financing it. HFA supports projects that connect Amsterdam to Humanism. The thinkers of seventeenth century Amsterdam made individual freedom, equality and autonomy more important. This preceded humanism, therefore the HFA suppports this project.

Many others supported this project, by finacing it, or in other ways. Read here who supported in other ways.
